RE: pet peave

Yes, I've experienced the same thing many times. It's very annoying. I don't know what the answer is. Even worse, you place your order at the counter and you watch the French Fry vat. Up comes one basket, up comes another basket, up comes a third basket. All them them went to the drive through. I'm standing at the counter 15 minutes (no joke ... I've time it), while the burger sits there getting colder and colder. In order to get their attention, I tell them I'm been waiting xxx number of minutes and by now my burger is probably cold. I want another one, with HOT fries at the same time. If they don't deliver, I request my money back. Usually, they get me the next burger and next fries and I'm out of there. It sends a message. What gets my craw, is when the person on the other end of the phone is a boy-friend or the cashier's kids and it's personal related. I DO get a little irate, especially when it's a long conversation, and let them know I'm upset, and usually do interrupt their "private" conversation. If it is truly "business" I quietly wait my turn, even if I had the cashier's attention first. And yes, you CAN tell when it's a personal call or a business call.

RE: Why does Australia get all the good campers?

Well, first off, it reminds me of dump truck with a tent on top. Then the next photos tell more of the story. It's a box on a flat-bed truck. What can you do with a flat bed truck in the good old U.S of A other than use it for an RV? Then, the top part opens to a tent. I think we're better off with the U.S.of A concept of a truck camper on the back of a 3500 dually! For the average person, a pick-up has more uses than a flat bed truck. I have a 5 x 10 foot utility trailer. I could pitch a tent on it and have almost the same thing!

Zoning finally caught up with us!

Well, it finally happened. After 9 years of parking my travel trailer beside the house, we received a notice ... attached to the door of the house ... (cowards!) that parking our travel trailer where it is parked is in violation of the city zoning ordinances. The cowards wouldn't even knock on the door. My wife was home as was our 2 adult children! Cowards! Chickens! Anyway, my wife called the zoning board and wanted to know what was going on. Turns out there's a "city counselman" that reported us. (What? after almost 10 years?) Go figure? Anyway, we've got about 10 days to move the trailer. Now zoning says we can park on our property, as long as we are parked 3 times the highest spot on the RV from the property line! Well, my trailer is over 10 feet high, and that means there not just enough room, and we can't park on the front of the house because vehicles cannot be parked on "green space" no closer than 30 feet from the sidewalk! Well, the decision is a no brainer! We are sick and tired of these nasty neighbors around us complaining about everything. Our next door neighbor has been after us for years to chop down all our trees because the leaves blow in their yard. We've tried to accommodate and live peacefully with every one around us. We don't complain, fuss, or get in anyone's business. We just want to live our lives and be left alone. But NOOOOO. These people get their kicks getting in everyone's business. Well, we kind of knew there was a risk when we bought the house almost 10 years ago, that someday we might not be able to park the travel trailer beside the house. So, the day finally came. We are fortunate in one respect. My wife's parents live on a farm, and for the winter we can park the trailer (and actually store it, maybe) in their barn. Anyway, it's going to a 4 acre country home for the winter now. No problem, we just can't do drive way camps in the winter now. So, I guess we'll be spending more time with the in-laws this winter. Meanwhile, it truly was a no brainer! I said from the moment we walked in this house that if ANYONE EVER complained about the trailer parked beside the house, "we're out of here!" We're putting the house up for sale on Monday! It might mean driving a little farther to work, but I'm sick and tired of this town. For what it's worth, I live in Carmel, Indiana. My address is on Main Street, and the neighbors around me THINK they are HIGH and MIGHTY. This town has a history of being the UPPER SNOBS of Indiana! I thought it has changed. But there's still some die-hards that really have their heads in the clouds. Well, maybe someone will buy this house who is just as snobby and fit right in the community! Yes, we're selling. Actually, we found a nice piece of property with 4 and 1/2 acres, a small pond, in the country with a gigantic barn! We're doing a drive by tomorrow, and this town can drop of the face of the earth as far as I'm concerned. For sale: 1 house in Carmel! I suppose I'm advertising to the wrong audience though, I don't think anyone on these forums would want to buy this house ... YOU can't park your RV here either! And yes! This is a no brainer. I'm not giving up my RV! It sleeps wherever I sleep! Who knows, if we end up buying that property, we won't have to go anywhere to go camping! We'll just park beside the pond! If we buy the house, I'll open my own campground! Everyone welcome!

RE: Something to ponder... from the other side

Why "no tents, free standing canopies or screen rooms"???? Just curious. Or is he just using this as an "example" since he started with "If".

RE: Alaska - The Future?

Kind of makes me glad I live in Indiana. Dan Quail became VP. He's from Indiana. No impact to Indiana, for or against. Kind of went by unnoticed! Maybe the same thing will happen in Alaska!

RE: Bait and Switch

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about it. Their policy specifically says, "Rates subject to all Arizona State and Local Taxes, and are subject to change without notice." http://www.westwindrvgolfresort.com/rates.php Yup! It was a 'bait and switch'!

RE: VW Bus Concept Samba

Amazing! Back in the 1960's VW buses had an image of being the preferred method of transportation for "hippies!" Now, they are a treasured vehicle ... especially one that's over 30 years old! Amazing how times change! For what it's worth, there was an image back in the early 1960, that people who owned travel trailers and truck campers were gypsies also (that may not be the politically correct term today, but that was the term then. I think today they are called "Travelers"). Amazing how times change the image of things.

RE: Awning Lights

We quit using awning lights completely. Didn't put them out in over 27 week ends of camping this summer. It's too much of a pain in the neck! Discovered we like the dark better! FYI, binder clips (used for holding office paper together in a bundle), work great on the awning. Slip the electric cord through the clip and then clip it to the edge of the cloth on the awning. In the event of wind, one quick pull and they all come snapping off. Works great .... when we use lights!

RE: Gas prices!!!

I won't be happy until its 37 cents a gallon again! I vividly remember when it neared $1.00 a gallon. Everyone in the country thought the world was coming to an end! That was a long time ago! Now, it's approaching $1.00 again, but this time from the other direction, and it seems everyone is panicking again! Has anyone noticed, a few months ago, drivers on the road were actually driving sensible: slow starts, easy stops, yielding the right of way, as if they were trying to conserve fuel. I REALLY noticed today, aggression is HIGH again and people are driving much, much faster than posted speed limits, even in school zones!

RE: Pick (a) unheated garage or (b) outside with cover and heat

I'd take the shelter with no heat. If you winterize your water lines, remove your battery, and keep it unplugged, I think you'll be better off. Cold is not going to hurt anything. But wind blowing the cover, and snow on the roof (even though it's covered) is more stressful on the trailer than under cover and just cold.

RE: Need PDF program

PDF Factory is a free down load. To create the PDF file, you just select "print" and instead of printing to paper, print to PDF factory. It makes a PDF file. We use this at work all the time for saving screen captures (I'm a software tester). Anything you can print to a printer can be printed to a PDF file. Web site pages, Window screen shots, Word Processing, and spreadsheets, anything that can be "printed."

RE: Thinking of Changing to Lightweight Pull-Behind

WELCOME! to the forums! No comment about the TT's you are considering, but I feel you will be much happier with a TT instead of a PUP, for ALL the reasons you stated above! All the reasons you stated is exactly why we switched from a PUP to a TT when we did!

RE: Dry Camping in 20 degree weather

We like to "dry camp" on the week-ends over the winter months. We did a week-end camp last week-end. We do take the trailer out and away from the house occasionally too. Here's how we do it. #1. You revert back to the old tenting days, before the days of running water and showers. So, we use our port-a-potty instead of the on-board toilet. That way, we can dump the "bucket" every day, rinse, add a little bleach, replace, and it's good to go. #2. Water is supplied in jugs. We have 5 - six gallon water jugs we purchased for Y2K (remember the frinzie back then about impending doom and gloom?) Well, those containers hold a lot of water! For what it's worth, that's 30 gallons of water. Our Fresh Water tank in the trailer is only 25 gallons. The jugs are stored in the bathtub, since we can't use it anyway. #3. We keep a tub in the kitchen sink to catch any water so it will not go down the drain. Those blue 6 gallon jugs have a vent hole with a plug. When turned on their side, open the vent hole, and you get a nice little stream of water, perfect for filling water glasses, making things wet, and no waste. Whatever is lost, goes in the tub, and that gets tossed outside. Our tub is one of those tubs they give you in the hospital to take a cat bath in. We've got a couple of them, and they fit perfect in the sink. #4. Washing? Water is heated in a pan on the stove with propane. Then, take a cat bath (using the same tub in the sink). #5. Dishes are washed ... you guessed it, with water heated on the stove and rinsed with the vent hole from one of those 6 gallon jugs. We also use more paper plates and plastic dinner ware than regular dishes too. And we use more disposable aluminum pans, pie pans, and cake size pans to minimize clean-up. If you do these things, you don't need water from a hose, or even in your RV water tank. There again, if you've got experience tent camping, just go back in my memories to those days, and use the comfort of having a solid roof over your head instead of canvas, and a nice bed, instead of a mat on the ground! You'll have lots of fun. Oh, one more thing. When you finally do take a shower, it's WONDERFUL!

RE: Help on ant problem

This may sound too simple, but get a bunch of citronella candles and set them in places where you see the ants. You don't need to light them, just set them out. They'll disappear and not come back. By the way, keep them out, and when they begin to loose their smell, scratch the wax a little to refresh the smell (it takes about 2 months to loose the smell before you need to scratch again. You can also take one bigger candle and break it up into a bunch of little pieces, and set the pieces around too. FYI, you won't have spiders either!

RE: Securing Items

We need to do all we can to "reasonably" protect our belongings, no matter what they are. Everyone know if you lock your car, anyone can break a window and still get your car stereo! But, you lock the doors anyway? Why? 1) To keep honest people honest. 2) To keep slightly dishonest people at bay. They will pick an easier target. 3) To verify with your insurance company that you have done everything within a reasonable amount of effort to protect your property. (If you leave your car door unlocked and something is stolen from the inside, or worse, the entire car is stolen and trashed, and the insurance company can prove it was unlocked, chances are they will not pay because YOU were negligent!) But hey. If all the skeptics out there want to leave your suff completely exposed, unsecured, wide open, and feel it's stupid or a waste of time to try to secure your property ... don't come back crying about how unfair and awful life is when it gets stolen!
